NBOE Board Meeting, 3/24/22
Peace and Blessings.
The Board must embody its governing power with its only employee, the Superintendent, Chief Academic Officer. Poor governance will lead to Newark losing it under QSAC and NJDOE will appoint a superintendent. You all are responsible for the proper allocation of resources that are necessary for success. The amount of funding received for mental health services was squandered on services that do not address mental health, SEL. The consequences of that squander will be felt in the lives of students, families, faculty, and staff for years to come, SOCIAL and EMOTIONAL LEARNING is a tool and does not replace a mental health professional who can provide appropriate tools, skills, and support to the students, families, staff, and faculty. Some of those supports are treatment, education, referrals, and consultation in times of crisis. Board you all signed off on that because you drank the kool-aid. It is a disservice someone would think that was appropriate to allocate funding to SEL instead of mental health professionals which is a sustainable solution. I am disgusted this happened and it perpetuates mental health stigma and shows the negligence of your fiduciary responsibility as a Board Also, it creates an impediment to learning and academic success. Again, which one of your friends or someone in your network received that contract? Inquiring minds want to know. The community fought hard to acquire full local control and FULL LOCAL CONTROL is necessary to maintain and sustain. You all need training. Your responsibility and accountability impact people’s lives. It is a matter of life and death. Hopefully, you all know the consequence of losing Governance and will make the necessary changes for governing NBOE.
Josephine Garcia still needs to resign from the Board and be held accountable for her disrespectful remarks towards the community as she is elected to serve.
My main point, is community schools. This model encompasses the school as the hub of the community. If the community had input about the mental health services fund allocation for mental health services, the propaganda would not have won for SEL services and actual mental health professionals would be in the school providing the necessary support to students, family, staff, and faculty. There are behavioral health treatment providers here in Newark. IEPs need to be translated into the native language of the parent instead of verbally translated. One major support is helping people be respectful to others starting with executive leadership. There needs to be a Social Worker with a social work degree supervising School Social Workers, which needs to change immediately. Again, I’m disgusted with whoever squandered that money. NBOE disregards the voice of the community because the school is no longer the hub, especially under the neoliberalism auspices of “choice” which is destabilizing our communities. The current One Newark Enrollment plan needs to be immediately dismantled. Families being required to choose 8 schools is not a “real choice”.
The Board needs to have more transparency and include the community in making decisions that impact the lives of NBOE students, families, staff, and faculty. Collaborate with parents and invested community members for the success and safety of NBOE schools. It is a matter of life and death.
Practice social distancing, wear a mask, wash your hands for 20 seconds, get vaccinated, get boosted. Peace and blessings.
NBOE Board Meeting
1/25/22
Peace and blessings. I hope you all had a safe, blessed, and prosperous New Year.
2022 requires changes so NBOE students, families, faculty, and staff can progress and prosper.
The first of these changes are for the Board to embody its governing power with only one employee, the Superintendent, Chief Academic Officer. Responsibility comes with that power and you all need to govern appropriately. Poor governance will lead to Newark losing it under QSAC and NJDOE will appoint a superintendent. You all are responsible for the proper allocation of its resources. Appropriate support and resources are necessary for success. The amount of funding received for mental health services was squandered on services that do not address mental health. The consequences of that squander will be felt in the lives of students, families, faculty, and staff for years to come, SOCIAL and EMOTIONAL LEARNING is a tool and does not replace a mental health professional who can provide appropriate supports to the students, families, staff, and faculty. Some of those supports are treatment, education, referrals, and consultation in times of crisis. SEL DOES NOT DO THAT. Board you all signed off on that because you drank the kool-aid. It is a disservice someone would think that was appropriate to allocate funding to SEL instead of mental health services which is a sustainable solution.
Second is Josephine Garcia still needs to resign from the Board and be held accountable for her disrespectful remarks towards the community as she is elected to serve. Do not re-elect her.
The third is my main point, community schools. This model encompasses the school as the hub of the community. If the community had input about the allocation of those funds received for mental health services, the propaganda would not have won for SEL services and actual mental health professionals would be in the school providing the necessary supports to students, family, staff, and faculty. One of those supports is helping people be respectful to others starting with executive leadership. There are behavioral health treatment providers here in Newark. There needs to be a Social Worker with a social work degree supervising School Social Workers, which needs to change immediately. Again, I’m disgusted with whoever squandered that money.
The remaining 2022 board meetings need to be virtual as a matter of safety.
Peace and Blessings

There are levels to healing
Healing is a challenging process

It is essential to know healing is a process that requires time, intention, consistency, focus, support, and effort.
to be whole is to be healed
What must be done to have serenity?
Let go and let God!

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can, and
Wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world As it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make things right
If I surrender to His Will
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life And supremely happy with Him forever and ever in the next.
How do you heal? How do you start the healing process?

There’s no 1 way to do it.

There’s work to heal your mind, body, and soul.

Now is the time.
Take the step to start your healing journey
Stay HYDRATED. The recommended water intake is 8-8 ounce glasses. Math problem 8*8=64. Yes, 64 ounces of water daily.
Be KIND to your mind. Think pleasant thoughts and focus on the best. Intentionally, start the day with an affirmation. Count your blessings. Keep your head up.
Rest, reset, recharge. Take a moment, a few seconds, or just a minute to sit down, breathe, and focus on the task at hand. This can be done as many times as needed. Remember eating a balanced meal is part of the 3R formula.
Connect with loved ones. Send a text, make s call, write an email, mail a card, visit, plan an outing, or spend a weekend with loved ones.
KNOW THAT YOU ARE ENOUGH

Do you believe the TRUTH makes you free?!?
That is a question we all must answer. TRUTH brings light to a matter. We all need light as a guide to our righteous path.
Read the “six uncomfortable truths…”

Now it’s time to let these TRUTHS be your light and guide on your righteous path. Each of us have our own path. Take the time to know your path and accept the truth to walk it.
Acceptance is the solution to all my problems.
The way you speak to yourself matters!!

Say words that…
#nurture your soul
#calm your mind
#encourage your heart
Just know…IT MATTERS!!
February is Black History Month

Carter G Woodson, author of The Miseducation of the Negro, started it as a week in February 1926 on this day, 2/7/1926 as Negro History Week
We celebrate and honor all those of African descent and in the African Diaspora
Black History is US History. Black History is British History. Black History is Brazilian History. Black History is Caribbean History. Black History is Asian History. Black History is European History. Black History is the history of the Americas. Black History is World History.
Yes, Black History is everyone’s history to be celebrated constantly and continually.
As a person of African descent, I must honor my history, the stories of my elders, the lives of my ancestors, and all the contributions to humanity with a legacy of triumph, strength, love, courage, and revolution.

Celebrate Black History 24/7/365 ♥️🖤💚
The legal profession need to oppose these efforts. Law school students can do it as a project.
The Southern Miss School of Social Work
Mississippi evidently aims to join the wave of red state legislatures prohibiting the teaching of “critical race theory” in public schools of any kind, even though legislative sponsors cannot either define CRT, or identify any educational program actually teaching it. (See https://mississippitoday.org/2022/01/21/every-black-mississippi-senator-walked-out-as-white-colleagues-voted-to-ban-critical-race-theory/.) No matter: the political rightwing wants to crow about suppressing discussions of race, for at least two reasons, I think.
First, I can’t help but believe that belligerent authoritarians (sadly, a rising proportion of Republicans, displacing traditional consensus-oriented conservatives) want to raise a middle finger to the racial justice protesters of the George Floyd rebellion who filled the streets in cities and towns across the country in the summer of 2020. It’s a stern message to the discontented troublemakers: Take that you radical-socialist-unpatriotic-antifa-loving-rioters! How dare you challenge the fairness and legitimacy of the system we faithfully serve, the rewards and privileges of which we (and our generous funders)…
